Special Education Review

Special Education Review

This is the first time in approximately ten years that a change has occurred. The review is sitting within a framework and is a part of the New Zealand Disability Strategy. Every child has the right to reach their potential and have access to the resources they require; it should not be a postcode lottery. This review will have an impact on education, legislation and our communities.

Special needs cover many areas; this is a discussion document that does not cover behaviour, early intervention, transport and property. It is recognised that these do have huge implications on children with special needs, but it was felt that if everything was taken into consideration the review would have taken many years instead of the relatively short timeline that this review is currently taking.

The timeline for the review process is as follows:
Submissions closed on the 19th March. In April the themes and trends of the responses will be reviewed. The summary will be presented to government in June / July 2010 and a plan will fall out from this and consequently be actioned.

The document can be found at and downloaded at: http://www.minedu.govt.nz/theMinistry/Consultation/ReviewOfSpecialEducation/DiscussionDocument2010.aspx
A hardcopy of the document can be requested by emailing SE.review@minedu.govt.nz The subject line in the email should be ‘Request for copy of the review of special education discussion document’
